Length of Course 2 years Examination Board EDEXCEL Assessment Method and Component Percentages A single A Level equivalent course consists of 6 units. Each unit is assessed as it is completed. Only one unit is assessed externally, the others are assessed internally and moderated externally. If there are enough students who opt for a double (2 A Level) equivalent then a 12 unit course will run starting September 2001. Entry Requirements Preferably to have completed a GCSE IT course in years 10/11. What You Will Learn You will:
Gain a broad understanding of ICT and be able to study selected areas in more depth Develop skills, knowledge and understanding of ICT Have the opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way Gain confidence through developing independent skills Various units on presenting information, spreadsheet design, database design, how ICT is used in organisations.
How You Will Learn The Sixth Form and GNVQ in particular require that students take on the responsibility for their own education. We want our students to become independent learners. It is important to the ICT staff that you will want to go and find out certain information yourself. You will be given certain information and very clear assessment targets which must be kept if you are to remain on the course. To meet these targets you will have to carry out research in your own time.
Subject Expectations The most important thing you need in order to take this course is a lively enquiring mind, and interest in Information and Communication Technology. A willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively are also important. We also require dedication. The time given to complete this course is sufficient to complete the entire syllabus in class time.
Career Opportunities This subject in itself will not be sufficient for students to go out into the computer industry. It will however provide an excellent starting point for students to go onto a HND course in ICT or provide on of the subjects so that you could go onto bypass any academic route and go onto Microsoft Engineering certification i.e. A+ or Microsoft Charted System Engineer.
Allied Subjects English to write reports etc. Mathematics, to solve real time problems. Physics to understand Information Technology & Communications in hardware, which are the two of the sciences within ICT. Key Skills This subject offers opportunities for students to develop the nationally specified Key Skills. The development of student Key Skills enrich their programme of study. It will also allow them to gain acknowledged qualifications that is valued by employers and providers of higher education.
