Length of Course This is a two-year course. Students may achieve an AS in there first year and a full A level in their second year. Examination Board The examination board for this subject is AQA. Assessment Method and Component Percentages Assessment is focused on the unit. For each unit there is only one method of assessment either a portfolio of evidence (assignment) or an external assessment. Portfolios are assessed by the school, and external assessments are set, marked and graded by AQA. One third of the compulsory and optional units will be externally assessed and will assess the essential skills, knowledge and understanding associated with that unit. Successful completion of Units 1-3 will lead to an AS; successful completion of all 6 units will lead to the award of AVCE. Entry Requirements Students will need 5 GCSEs at grade C or above. You do not have to have studied GCSE Business Studies before, but it is to your advantage if you have. However, a broad range of GCSEs is extremely valuable.
What You Will Learn The main aim of this course is to stimulate your interests in, and enjoyment of business. You will also gain a knowledge and understanding of how businesses operate and the world in which businesses operate. You will be able to recognise the value of businesses and there value to the local and national economy. How You Will Learn On a personal level, you will develop practical skills related to business, foster imaginative and critical thinking as well as acquire knowledge of the outside world. Subject Expectations AVCE Business is a demanding subject that requires commitment and hard work. Wider reading is essential to achieve a high grade. You are expected to read national broadsheet newspapers and watch relevant programmes such as Newsnight and The Money Programme. Career Opportunities AVCE Business provides a wide range of career opportunities. It offers: progression on to the next stage of general qualifications e.g. degrees such as Business Studies, Accounting and Economics, Higher Nationals in Business; direct entry into employment within business in a variety of roles such as in marketing, accounting, human resources and administration; further learning opportunities within employment (e.g. accounting qualifications progression onto the next stage of vocational qualifications either within the same area or related areas; NVQs in areas such as accounting, management, sales and administration.
Allied Subjects Business has many related subjects and can be a useful main subject or a subsidiary subject. Examples include English (especially journalism), Economics, Sociology, Psychology and Law. Key Skills This subject offers opportunities for students to develop the nationally specified Key Skills. The development of student Key Skills enrich their programme of study. It will also allow them to gain acknowledged qualifications that is valued by employers and providers of higher education. The main key skills, communication, Information Technology and application of numbers are available at Level 1,2 or 3.
