Length of Course 2 years Examination Board EDEXCEL Assessment Method and Component Percentages The Early Years Award course is made up of 6 units (6 units = 1 ‘A’ Level) Entry Requirements It is not required for this course that you should have studied Child Development or Child Care at GCSE, however it is recommended that candidates should have obtained at least a C grade in 5 or more subjects. Students interested should be able to demonstrate a good record of attendance and punctuality and have a lively and enquiring mind. You should have an interest in the Care and Education of children during their early years and show a willingness to explore new ideas. You will need to be able to communicate these ideas effectively. What You Will Learn You will: Gain a broad understanding of early years working environments Develop skills, knowledge and understanding in health, care and early years education Have an opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way via work placements Follow a programme of study that enables progression to both higher education and employment in Health, Social Care and Early Years Education Develop Key Skills that are highly valued by employers and higher education Gain confidence by developing independent learning skills

Some formal teaching will be undertaken to underpin the knowledge required to undertake the assignments, case studies and formal tests. Subject Expectations As there is a high level of outside involvement with this subject it is expected that students undertaking this course will attend all lessons regularly with any absence kept to a minimum. All appointments should be made out of school hours. Students are expected to telephone the school before 8.30am if they are unable to attend for any reason. Students are also expected to arrive on time to all lessons with all the correct equipment. A number of work placements will be undertaken throughout the year for which the students are responsible for ensuring the reputation of Minster College is upheld. Travel arrangements are the student’s responsibility. Career Opportunities Students gaining an Early Years National Award will have access to a range of career and further education opportunities. You will learn and use a variety of transferable skills throughout the course, including collecting analysing and interpreting data, communicating your findings in different ways, and identifying and developing the links between different parts of the subject. These skills are in great demand and are recognised and highly valued by employers, universities and colleges as being of great value. An Early Years National Award can support applications for a degree in nursing, or Midwifery or, it can support applications for Teacher Training or Social Work. This qualification may also provide the basis for a broad range of university based Social Science courses. Some students choose to use their qualification to go straight into employment, rather than go onto higher education. In completing this course Early Years National Award students develop the transferable skills that employers are looking for, so you can consider a very wide range of employment opportunities and further training in health and care settings, including early years, social care and health care. Allied Subjects This will be a stand alone course equivalent to one A Levels. Key Skills This subject offers opportunities for students to develop the nationally specified Key Skills. The development of student Key Skills enrich their programme of study. It will also allow them to gain acknowledged qualifications that is valued by employers and providers of higher education.
