Length of Course AS -1 year A2 - 2 years Examination Board AQA. Syllabus B Assessment Method and Component Percentage Assessment will be by examination and by coursework. Modules AS (2) and A2 (4) will be by coursework. For details of module content see below. Each Coursework module provides 15% of the total mark. Entry Requirements It is recommended that students should have obtained at least a B grade in English and English Literature. What You Will Learn Students will take a number of modules, which will allow them to develop their appreciation of literary texts. These will be: AS 1 – Introduction to the study of literature AS 2 – A study of one poetry and one drama text AS 3 – A study of a Shakespearean text. (These are the three modules which make up the AS examination) In the second year three more modules will be taken leading to “A” level. They are as follows: A2 – Module 4 – Comparing two literary texts A2 – Module 5 – A study of drama before 1770 and poetry before 1900 A2 – Module 6 – A final module testing the student’s awareness of literary appreciation through pre release material and unseen texts. How You Will Learn Through a structured programme of teaching combined with effective personal research. Subject Expectations Students need to be enthusiastic and committed to their study of literature. They should enjoy reading and responding to literary texts. Career Opportunities A pass in “A” level English Literature, in combination with other advanced subjects, may well lead to a student taking a degree programme in a range of subjects. This may, in turn, lead to careers in the communication/media industries. For those not wishing to go to University an “A” level in English Literature is still a useful qualification well respected by employers. Allied Subjects History, Law, Sociology and Art may be appropriate subjects to take in combination with English Literature. However the fact that the subject can be taken as an AS (a one year course) will allow a greater range of combinations. Key Skills This subject offers opportunities for students to develop the nationally specified Key Skills. The development of student Key Skills enrich their programme of study. It will also allow them to gain acknowledged qualifications that is valued by employers and providers of higher education. The main key skills Communication, Information Technology and Application of Numbers are available at Level 1, 2 and 3.
