What Will You Learn

You will develop an understanding of various forms of spoken and written French.  You will also learn how to communicate effectively using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language.  You will develop insights into and contact with the culture of French Speaking countries.

How Will You Learn

As well as of course textbook, you will be exposed to authentic materials.  This means any language, spoken or written that a citizen of those countries would come across in every day life, in terms of entertainment, information or culture.  He will be expected to carry out individual research and participate in practical group activities.

Subject Expectations

Students will be expected to be prepared to develop personal communication skills and take opportunities to experience the culture of French speaking countries through newspapers, television and the Internet.  While it is to be hoped that students will derive great personal satisfaction and enrichment in gaining fluency, it should not be forgotten that a high level of commitment is required to make the most of the course.

Career Opportunities

Perhaps the biggest advantage in studying a language at this level is to use it as an added skill when applying for jobs and courses.  Although French is a very useful language to have at your disposal, you are also demonstrating your ability to learn a language and to communicate.  This means that, should an employer require you to learn any other language to whatever level, he or she can be assured that you have the ability to do so.

Don’t believe The Myth that the only jobs available with a level are teaching and translating.  Less than ten per cent of language graduates go into these jobs.  In 1999 the majority went into the following jobs: business services, manufacturing, wholesale and retail sales, banking and finance, health/community/social services, transport communications and public administration.  There were less graduates unemployed than any other subject except medicine, law, education or architecture.

Don’t believe The Myth either that the whole world speaks English. They do if they want to sell you something! We should be speaking their language if we want to sell them something! Who would you buy from? Someone speaking your language? Or someone speaking of language you don’t understand? Within a few years Spanish is expected to be the most used language on the Internet.  Spanish is also expected to be the first language of more than half of the United States of America within a few years.

Allied Subjects

The ability to communicate in another language is a very valuable skill with which to complement any other subject.  The study of another language with its structure and grammar is well known to improve and hone anyone’s ability to understand and communicate effectively in English.

Key Skills

This subject offers opportunities for students to develop the nationally specified Key Skills.  The development of student Key Skills enrich their programme of study.  It will also allow them to gain acknowledged qualifications that is valued by employers and providers of higher education.  The main key skills communication, Information Technology and Application of Numbers are available at Level 1, 2 and 3
