Length of Course

Geography is a two year course, divided like other A Levels into AS and A2 levels. The AS level can be converted into an A level by completing the second, A2, course.

Assessment of the Course

At AS there are three examinations:

1.                  Physical system and their management
2.                  Human system and their management
3.                  Geographical investigation

The exams are one hour each.

At A2 there are two examinations:

1.                  Issues in the environment
2.                  Issues in sustainable development 
3.                  There is also a Fieldwork assignment.

How You Will Learn

Both practical (fieldwork) and theoretical approaches are used and students look at theories behind the topics covered as well as examples and case studies. Individual investigation and research support discussion, written assignments and the fieldwork report. An interest in current events is likely to be helpful.

What We Cover

The AS course covers:

  • Rivers
  • Coasts
  • Economic activity and location
  • Settlements (towns and villages)
  • Population growth

The A2 we cover environmental and development issues which link to ‘green issues’ and science.  They will also appeal to students interests in social issue. 

Subject Expectations

Regular attendance is of major importance and students will be expected to provide themselves with basic equipment. Some extra expenditure for the cost of fieldwork and additional text books may be required. Access to a computer and the Internet is an advantage.

Career Opoprtunities

Career opportunities will vary depending on subject combinations, they include Environmental Management, Leisure and Tourism, Town & Country Planning, Surveying, Social Work, Banking and Teaching.

Allied Subject

Geography fits well with a number of subjects, like Physics, Biology, Maths, Statistics, Sociology or History. Geography can be looked at either as a science or an art subject. It also provides excellent opportunities to develop and use Key Skills.

Key Skills

This subject offers opportunities for students to develop the nationally specified Key Skills.  The development of student Key Skills enrich their programme of study.  It will also allow them to gain acknowledged qualifications that is valued by employers and providers of higher education.  The main key skills, communication, Information Technology and application of numbers are available at Level 1,2 or 3.
