Length of Course This is a two-year course comprised of six units 3 units in year one for AS qualification Examination Board The examination board for this course is EDEXCEL Assessment Method and Component Percentages Up to two thirds of the course will be internally assessed through a programme of assignments set and marked by your tutors. The course requires that the examination board externally assess two of the units. This could be by a written test, set assignments, projects or by a case study based on the unit content. Unit 1 – Portfolio – The Leisure Industry Unit 2 – External –Working Practices in Leisure Unit 3 – Portfolio – The Leisure customer Unit 4 – Portfolio – Leisure in action Unit 5 – External – Employment in Leisure Unit 6 – Portfolio – Current issues in Leisure Each unit has equal weighting Entry Requirements As with all Advanced Level subjects it is recommended that students have 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C. Whilst it is not compulsory to have studied GCSE Physical Education or Leisure and Tourism, it could be an advantage if you have. However, a wide range of good GCSEs in a variety of subjects is equally beneficial. How You Will Learn Students will have the opportunity of learning through a variety of methods, including: Students are expected to take an active part in their learning. This includes wider reading of newspapers and subject related journals and magazines, and watching leisure related television programmes in order to develop a wider knowledge of the industries. Subject Expectations This course will appeal to students who: Wish to study a course that is active and enjoyable Have a keen interest in the Leisure Industry Enjoy studying a subject that is relevant to their own lives and experience Want to find out more about the subject through practical investigation Are interested in developing an understanding of organisation, the markets they serve and how to deal with customers effectively Wish to move on to a related career or higher education course.
Career Opportunities Students with an Advanced GCE in Leisure have access to a wide range of possible career and higher education opportunities. You learn and use a variety of transferable skills throughout the course. These include collecting, analysing and interpreting data, communicating your findings in different ways and identifying and developing the links between different parts of the subject. These skills are in great demand and are recognised by employers, universities and colleges. Many students choose to use their qualification to go straight into employment rather than progress to higher education. There are a wide range of opportunities in such areas as Recreational Management, Leisure Activities, Armed Forces and the Civil Services. Allied Subjects The Advanced GCE in Leisure Studies combines well with a variety of AS and A2 GCEs. When taken with Physical Education, Biology, Geography, ICT, Sociology or Law it supports a wide range of university courses or entry to employment. Key Skills This subject offers opportunities for students to develop the nationally specified Key Skills. The development of student Key Skills enrich their programme of study. It will also allow them to gain acknowledged qualifications that is valued by employers and providers of higher education. The main key skills, Communication, Information Technology and application of numbers are available at Level 1, 2, and 3.
