This course, although not a secretarial course, is designed to prepare students for working in an administration environment.

Length of Course

This is a one-year course comprising NVQ Administration Level 2 or 3.

Examination Board

The examination board for the NVQ is the LDI

Assessment Method and Component Percentages

The course is assessed by developing portfolio evidence collected from the work environment.  This portfolio will be presented for external verification as the student’s record of competency in the area of office skills.

Entry Requirements

NVQ Level 2: A commitment to learning the skills involved in office skills and developing good inter-personal skills.  Good grades in GCSE exams would be an advantage.

NVQ Level 3: A good educational background and/or NVQ Level 2.

Whay You Will Learn

The main component of the course is an NVQ in Administration, which is a practical qualification, based on nationally recognised standards set by industry. You will be placed with a senior member of staff or within a department/faculty and will act as their PA/Administrative Assistant.  You will be required to collect evidence to demonstrate your competence in a variety of skills such as typing, reception duties, filing, health and safety, and using a computer.  Your entry for the NVQ will be dependent on the production of a portfolio of evidence which reflects your proficiency within the units and elements set out by the NVQ syllabus.

How You Will Learn

You will learn through practical on-the-job training within a work environment and structured classroom lessons.

Subject Expectations

The Office Skills course is a demanding one that requires dedication, a willingness to work hard.  A vital element of this course is attendance, punctuality and a professional attitude and dress code.  Students will be expected to attend the course between 8.30 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Career Opportunities

Administration skills are in demand especially if you are prepared to travel to work.  The skills you will learn will help you to gain employment within office environments and possible secretarial work.

Allied Subjects

The Office Skills course will prepare you for:

  • NVQ Administration.
  • GNVQ Intermediate Business
  • Work Placements

Key Skills

This subject is an optional extra to the main programme of study, only available to students who are comfortable with the level of work required to complete their NVQ 2 Office Skills course.  It will offer the opportunity for students to develop nationally recognised Key Skills, which are valued by employers and providers of Further Education.
