What is a BTEC National Award?

A BTEC National Award is a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Students focus on a particular subject area and develop a range of specialist skills and knowledge.

It is equivalent to one GCE A level or a Single Award VCE. It helps students to enter employment or to progress to a more responsible job if already in employment. Learners may also use it, together with other qualifications, to progress to higher education.

A BTEC National Award is normally taken full time alongside other qualifications or part time by people in employment. It is equally suitable for school leavers and mature students.

What are the entry requirements?

Students should have at least one of the following:

  • a BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject
  • an Intermediate GNVQ in a related subject
  • at least four GCSEs at grades A*-C
  • appropriate work experience

What is the course structure?

The course is made up of six units - four core units which everyone takes and two specialist units which explore particular topics in more depth.

What subjects will I study?

All students take the four core units:

  • Introduction to Business
  • Business and Management
  • Creative Product Promotion
  • Presenting Business Information

This unit is externally set and assessed by Integrated Vocational Assignment (IVA).

Learners also take two specialist units from this list:

  • Business Online
  • Finance, Cash Flow, and Insolvency
  • Profitability and Reporting
  • Introduction to Marketing
  • Relationship Marketing
  • Recruitment and Selection
  • Employer and Employee Relations
  • Improving Performance in the Workplace
  • Managing a Business Project or Event
  • Setting up a Administrative System
  • Health and Safety in the Workplace
  • Business Ethics

How is the course assessed?

All units are assessed and graded, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. Unit 3 is externally assessed by a controlled Integrated Vocational Assignment which is set and marked by Edexcel. All other units are internally assessed and graded by teachers. An overall grade for the qualification is awarded to all learners who successfully complete all units. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit or Distinction.

What can I do at the end of the course?

BTEC National Awards are valued by employers and higher education (universities and colleges).

The Award supports learners in applying for jobs in business-related careers such as accounting, administration, customer service, finance , IT, personnel or sales.

Learners may progress to a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Business. Students may then progress to university or college for a degree or a BTEC Higher National course in Business.
